The following is a brief checklist that Spearman Moving Services has established to help your move run more smoothly. 1. Allow 6 to 8 weeks to plan your move and to rearrange any other activities that may occur during this time. * Select qualifed movers and obtain estimates from each one. * Determine your move date prior to choosing a moving company. * Choose the best mover and discuss all details of the move including: Insurance, Packing and Delivery. 2. 4 to 5 weeks prior to your move. * Start the process at your local post office and or internet ( www.usps.com) and put in for a change of address. * Decide on what items you would like to keep or dispose of by donating to an organization such as Goodwill. * If you are packing yourself then make arrangements for the moving company to provide you with the appropriate boxes that will be needed. Otherwise if you are not packing, contact the moving company to have some of their employees to be at your location to pack your belongings. * If you are moving to a new town and have children that are in school, arrange to have their records transferred to the new school location. 3. 2 to 3 weeks prior to your move * Contact all utility companies and let them know that you are moving to another address so that they can discontinue your services or continue them on to another address if they cover that area. Otherwise contact a new utility provider for your new address. * Verify with the moving company the scheduled moving date. * Begin the process of having your belongings packed. * Notify the following of your new address so there won't be any delays in statements being mailed to you. ° Auto/Health Insurance ° Social Security Office ° Credit Cards ° Bank and your Employer. * Have all prescriptions refilled and transferred to your new pharmacy. * Have all of your medical records transferred if your are moving out of town and do the same with any pet records that you may have. 4. 1 week prior to your move * Defrost refrigerator and freezers and dry out. * Discontinue any delivery services such as newspaper and magazines. * Pack any personal belongings that you are preparing to take in your own personal car. * Have a box packed with just the basics to carry with you until you get everything unpacked. Items to consider are: toiletries, paper products, household cleaners and necessary medications. * At the end of the move do a final walk through to make sure no items were left behind. Make sure to check all closets, attics, floor spaces and garages for hidden items.
